Who is knocking on the door? Bear is knocking on the door. How can this be?!?

Neat. But kinda spooky.

But yeah, I'm doing ok. Nothing really going on to report - thus the stupid-ass news links. At least it's something.

Here we go, here we go, here we go again.... Jun. 29th, 2005 @ 12:17 am
Just got back from spending the last couple of days in Durham. Well, not just got back. We got home before noon today. But I spent most of the afternoon/evening chillaxing or sleeping, so it's the same net effect.

Dad went back to Duke yesterday for a follow-up procedure to reverse the ileostopy he got back in November. It was a much less intensive surgery, taking all of twenty to thirty minutes to complete and leaving just the old, quarter-sized stoma scar in his abdomen. He's been up and about today and feeling pretty good, beyond the obvious pain, and they released him around nine this morning. The hospital wait was seemingly interminable, as usual - leaving us holed up in the waiting room for something like six and a half, seven hours. It would have been much less, but either through miscommunication or convenient failure of memory, they put dad completely under anesthesia, rather than just sticking with the recommended epidural - which tacked two hours of recovery time onto the wait. He was still sleepy and half out of it after they shuffled him off to his room, so David and I paid a short visit and popped off to Durham Pizza for lunch. The place is kind of a dive, but the pie's pretty damn good. They fix it up with a nice thin, crispy crust and just the right amount of sauce and toppings. I'd recommend it, should someone find themselves out that way - though I'm sure the locals could probably put forward some other suggestions.

Yeah, so there's not much going on. Still.

Had an moderately interesting dream on Saturday, though I don't feel like relating the entire thing. It was basically built on the framework of an 80's-style "slobs 'n snobs" college movie set in a co-ed beach house dorm. The most that really sticks out at the moment were the protag stealing and strewing the luggage of the antag (leaving him to wander around in his skivvies through snake-and-scorpion infested areas) after homey shit on the dude's bed. This followed in retaliation for an earlier snubbing where Main Guy refused to be intimidated by the sheet-shitter (and, really, given his propensities, would you take him seriously, either?). The only other notable events involved a woman who looked like Sarah Rue with long black hair and the housemates' rather unusual drug-dispensation system. Being a good college movie, everybody smoked chronic. Though no one ever seemed to care how much it (theoretically) cost. If you wanted a bit of someone's stash, you settled it with HeroClix figures (the girl, for instance, had a Venom tossing back a cold beer *shrug*) - the winner collecting what they wanted (though usually not more than a dime's worth out of good sportsmanship). At least I think that's how it worked - it's not like there was a narrator or anything explaining all of this.

As for the rest of my time, it's mostly the same as always. Though I've picked up a weekend DnD game now - fulfilling my long-vacant TT gaming credit. I'm enjoying it so far, and would be willing to go into long, excruciatingly-dull detail with anyone expressing even the slightest interest. So it's probably best not to ask unless you really want to know.

Not that there seems to be anyone on my IM lists anymore. Well, no one that I don't see on Awake on a fairly regular basis. I used to know people. I swear.

Interesting, yes?

At least it makes a bit more sense than that proposed "Labyrinth" sequel I heard about a while back. As fun as that movie was, it was pretty self-contained - the goblins were defeated, and the Jennifer Connely decides she really *should* get around to growing up (and being hot). Everybody's happy. "Dark Crystal" on the other hand (though still wrapping up pretty tightly at the end) does have that whole "what else is on that freaky-ass planet?" thing going for it. Although, with the Skeksis zooming around the Uncharted Territories, making acid-vomiting pains of themselves, I dunno what sort of "threat" they're going to manage to come up with for those creepy lil' Froud-things to defeat.

Of course, I'd probably watch both of them, anyway (eventually).

Blegh. Dreamweaver stopped working for no reason I can understand, despite working perfectly fine yesterday and following a full wipe and install.

Stupid computer. Now I have to do everything by hand.

I hate that.

Wish I had a working version of Dreamweaver. But I dunno where I'd scrounge up the cash for it.

Another dream entry in the main diary. I could double-post, I suppose, but where's the making-you-jump-through-hoops in that? I promise that it was pretty weird, though, so perhaps it's worth the extra 8 seconds to leave LJ.
» Well, *of course*....
I don't remember if I've mentioned it before, but my uncle Alan has but recently gone off to Iraq for about a year to work as a firefighter in the foreign enclave. Come to think of it, I may have said 'paramedic' - but that was a misunderstanding on my part. So anyway, he's been in Iraq for a couple of weeks now and I got an email from him last week letting the family know that he'd arrived safely and was getting settled in. But that's all I'd heard about it.

Then my mom tells me last night that she'd gotten one late Friday where he says he'd been placed in Fallujah. I think this was written before this latest business went down, so I dunno if there was anything in particular going on when he wrote. Of course, I'm sure things are/will shortly be getting a hell of a lot more interesting when the offensive goes live.

Somehow, no matter how much I want to, I simply can't make myself be surprised by this news. It's so typical for my genetic luck. That's not to say, certainly, that I believe there's some sort of family curse. I don't think the universe is that interested in anyone to go out of its way to fuck them over. But it does tend to get you wondering after a while.
» Four. More. Years. Siiiiiiiigh.....
So, yeah, I'm disappointed that it was a re-election.

But, I'm not even gonna joke about leaving the country. For one thing, that's what they always say when you speak out to disagree - "Love it or leave it." So, y'know, Fuck You. If I don't like how things are run, I'm going to do what I can to get it changed to suit me. Love it or fix it. God bless the USA, bitch.

Actually, that seems to be the only thing. I've forgotten if I had another reason not to light out for the northern territories. And that one's pretty good.

Anyhow, by all (hm... better be safe and say most) accounts he won the election fair and square. Three or so million votes isn't a quibbling margin, y'know? So I say we just buckle in and ride out the next four years and hope Cheney olds out before he comes up for another run at the Big Chair. Though that does beggar the question as to who'll go up to bat next time around. Neither party is known for running a losing horse twice, and, far as I know, the Reps haven't presented their next entry in the pageant.

Well, here's hoping.
